Author's Journey

My name is Breannah Mitchell, and I am an Australian filmmaker and director taking my first exciting steps into the world of children's book writing.

Growing up beside the ocean in Hervey Bay, Queensland, has shaped my love for the natural world. The coral reefs have always held a special place in my heart, inspiring my passion for the ocean and the incredible life it supports. Through my filmmaking and now my writing, I hope to share the beauty of our underwater world and inspire young readers to appreciate, respect and protect these precious environments.

My journey into children's book writing began during a challenging chapter of my life, as I experienced flare-ups associated with vasculitis, an autoimmune disease, and fibromyalgia. During these difficult periods, writing became a creative outlet, allowing me to channel my creativity into something positive and meaningful. It gave me an opportunity to explore new ways of storytelling and transform my love for the ocean into stories that could inspire others.

I believe the next generation will play an important role in shaping the future of our planet. Through stories that spark curiosity, encourage imagination and celebrate the wonders of nature, I hope to help children develop a lifelong connection with the world around them and inspire them to care for the reefs and wildlife that make our planet so special.

I also embrace living with dyslexia and ADHD, which are part of my journey as a creative. I hope my experiences remind young readers that everyone learns, thinks and expresses themselves differently, and that these differences are something to celebrate. You don't have to follow a traditional path to chase your dreams or share your stories with the world.

For me, children's book writing is more than a new creative adventure. It is an opportunity to turn challenging experiences into something meaningful, inspire young minds, nurture a love for the natural world and encourage the next generation to protect the incredible planet we call home.

Directors Journey

Breannah Mitchell is an Australian filmmaker, director, cinematographer, writer and editor with a passion for telling meaningful stories through the perspectives of others. Her filmmaking journey began at the age of 16 while attending high school, where she discovered her love for visual storytelling and the power of film to connect people, share experiences and inspire change.

At just 18, Breannah took the next step in her creative journey by establishing her own production company, BM Film Productions. She began building her portfolio through profile videos, commercials and business productions, developing her skills across all stages of filmmaking while working with a diverse range of people, businesses and organisations.

Over the past few years, Breannah has increasingly dedicated her heart and creative energy to telling stories about Australia's underwater world, particularly the coral reefs and marine life that have inspired her from a young age. With a deep passion for the ocean and its conservation, she strives to bring attention to the extraordinary natural environments that exist right on our doorstep and to encourage greater appreciation and protection of these precious ecosystems.

This passion led to the creation of her documentary, Corals on Your Doorstep, a film celebrating the ancient coral reefs of Hervey Bay, Queensland, and the connections people have with these remarkable underwater environments. The documentary has received multiple awards and recognition nationally and internationally, including at the Australian Youth Film Festival, Sunshine Coast Showdown and Fraser Shorts Film Festival.

As a filmmaker, Breannah is passionate about creating authentic, emotionally engaging stories that give people a voice and allow audiences to see the world through different perspectives. Whether working on documentaries, commercial productions or conservation-focused projects, she approaches each story with curiosity, creativity and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Through BM Film Productions, Breannah continues to explore the power of storytelling, with a particular focus on the natural world, human connection and the stories that deserve to be seen and heard.
